Fábio da Conceição Bretes da Costa Alegre, a student at the Polytechnic University of Bragança and a scholarship holder at the Centre for Research into Digitalisation and Intelligent Robotics (CeDRI), distinguished himself whilst representing São Tomé and Príncipe at the 46th Chess Olympiad, held in September 2026 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, finishing the competition in first place amongst the teams from FIDE Zone 4.3.
Individually, Fábio scored 6 points from 9 games, with four wins, four draws and just one defeat, achieving the highest score on his team and securing São Tomé and Príncipe’s first FIDE Master title, a distinction that marks a new milestone for the São Toméan national team.
CeDRI congratulates Fábio Costa Alegre on this achievement and on his contribution to chess in São Tomé and Príncipe. His journey is an example of dedication and perseverance for the academic community, demonstrating how education, research and sport can go hand in hand.
